Esther Sofaer

The DuoFriends since meeting as students at the Royal Northern College of Music, Esther Sofaer and Heejung Kim began playing together professionally as a piano duo in 2002. They are able to draw inspiration from their extensive studies both in the UK and abroad. Their diverse repertoire encompasses the standard classical works as well as contemporary genres. As Park Lane Artists, they have given recitals at the Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields and twice at the Purcell Room.

Other concert highlights have included two substantial tours of the UK and appearances at the Chichester Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Deal Festival, Sounds New Festival, Rye Festival, Paxton Festival and Lake District Summer Music Festival. Further a field, the duo has made appearances in Latvia and Austria.

Esther and Heejung are passionate about raising the profile of the piano duet. The medium, the repertoire of which spans from the seventeenth century to the present day, contains many hidden treasures, both original works and transcriptions. The form is unique in that it is the only musical encounter where two players exploit the full range of one instrument, making it not only musically but also visually exciting.
